TEAM USA SET TO SHINE AT WORLD SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

[EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, April 17th, 2024] Team USA will have strong representation at the World Senior Championships. This event, for athletes over the age of 50, will bring teams from more than 26 countries to Oestersund, Sweden, from April 20-27, all vying to be crowned best in the world.

The Men’s and Women’s rinks that will wear the colors of Team USA earned their spots by winning the 2024 Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s National Championship titles.

On the men’s side, Team Farbelow (Mike Farbelow, Rich Ruohonen, Bill Stopera, Darren Lehto/Saint Paul Curling Club, Ardsley Curling Club, Seattle Granite) will represent the U.S. after earning the championship trophy in February at the Senior Men’s Nationals at the Heather Curling Club in Mapleton, MN. The members of this team have no shortage of experience at international events. Stopera represented the United States at the World Men’s in 2012, Ruohonen competed at the World Men’s in 2008 and 2018, while Lehto was part of Team USA at the World Men’s in 2013 and the World Senior Men’s in 2023.

On the women’s side, Team Montgomery (Angela Montgomery, Susan Dukes, Stephanie Erstad, Anne Gravel, Kathy Pielage/Madison Curling Club) will represent Team USA. Team Montgomery shook up the podium at the 2024 Senior Women’s Nationals, held in February at the Circle City Curling Club just outside Indianapolis, by ending the five year championship run of teams skipped by Margie Smith.

“We are very excited to see Team Farbelow and Team Montgomery compete at the World Senior Curling Championships in Sweden,” said Dean Gemmell, CEO of USA Curling. “These athletes epitomize the spirit of curling as a lifelong sport. Their dedication has allowed them to maintain their high level of play, and they make important contributions off the ice as well.”

Team USA has 18 podium finishes at the World Senior Championships, including three gold medals, with the most recent gold won in 2015 by Team Sieg.
