USA CURLING PARTNERS WITH NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY TO GATHER CURLING DATA

USA Curling has partnered with North Carolina State University to conduct an important national survey that will help determine the current state of curling in the United States.

The sport of curling has experienced unprecedented growth over the past several years, and with this growth, it is important to understand who is partaking in the sport, how often they play, and how participants would describe their experience with the sport.

“We’ve seen clubs across the country fill up every learn-to-curl slot on their calendars and create waiting lists due to the demand for curling in some areas of the United States,” said USA Curling Director of Development Dean Gemmell. “Having quantifiable data will help USA Curling understand not only what drives new curlers into the doors of curling clubs, but assess what efforts are working, what might not be as effective as initially thought, and overall, better the experiences for people within our growing sport.”

Spearheading the survey is Dr. Michael Kanters, who has focused many of his projects on examining factors that contribute to positive youth sport experiences and programmatic strategies to increase physical activity through sport.

“In our current age of analytics data are used to inform decisions at every level of an organization,“ said Dr. Kanters. “While it certainly appears that curling has grown at unprecedented rates over the past decade and we can likely point to a number of factors that have contributed to this growth, the truth is they would be estimates based on our own experiences. With this national study we hope to learn more about the current profile of curling participants. Data from this study will be a first step in helping the industry sustain this growth, retain participants, and more importantly grow the game in previously underserved populations.”

With the goal of using and distributing the collected data to help clubs, regions, and the sport of curling grow across the country, USA Curling is asking individuals who have curled or are actively curling in the United States to complete the 10-minute survey.

All survey responses will remain completely anonymous and be used to project and foster future growth opportunities.

Survey participants will be entered into a giveaway to win an official USA Curling in-ice button, signed by 2022 Mixed Doubles Curling Olympians, Chris Plys and Vicky Persinger, and Coach Sean Beighton.
