SHUSTER TAKES BRONZE, THIESSE QUALIFIES USA FOR WORLD WOMEN’S
[EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, November 4, 2024]— It was mission accomplished for Team USA at the 2024 Pan Continental Curling Championships, with both the men’s and women’s teams earning berths in the 2025 World Men’s and World Women’s championships. To advance to the next level, both teams needed to finish in fifth place or higher in the A Division.
Team Shuster (John Shuster, Chris Plys, Colin Hufman, Matt Hamilton, John Landsteiner), represented the United States at the event and turned in an outstanding performance, finishing on the podium after defeating Team Canada in a thrilling bronze medal matchup.
Shuster finished second in round-robin play, with the team’s only blemish a narrow loss to Canada. In the semi-finals, they were defeated by China, who went 4-3 in round robin play. China went on to earn gold over Japan in the championship game.
On the women’s side, Cory Thiesse took over skipping duties for Team Peterson, with Aileen Geving joining the American side the alternate. The team (Cory Thiesse, Vicky Persinger, Tara Peterson, Taylor Anderson, Aileen Geving) competed against a very strong field. After a number of very close finishes, the team wound up fifth in the standings—out of the playoffs but high enough to earn that important berth in the upcoming World Women’s.
In the Men’s B Division, Phillipines topped the field and will replace Chinese Tapei in the A Division at next year’s championship. In the Women’s B Division, Australia finished in first place and will replace Mexico in the A Division in 2025.
