WORLD WHEELCHAIR CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SOUTH KOREA START ON MARCH 2ND
[EAGAN, MN, March 1, 2024] — The 2024 SD Biosensor World Wheelchair Curling Championships are set to get underway at the Gangneung Curling Centre in Korea on March 2nd. The four-person Team competition will conclude on March 9th, and will be followed by the Mixed Doubles event from March 10th through the 16th.
This is the 17th time the Team championship has been held. The Mixed Doubles World Wheelchair Curling Championship is a relatively new discipline—this is the third time it has been contested.
In the Team competition, 12 teams will compete for the title. The Americans will face host Korea, Canada, China, Czechia, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Scotland, Slovakia, and Sweden. China returns to defend the title it won in Richmond, BC, Canada, in 2023.
The United States finished sixth in the 2023 Team event. In Korea, Team USA will include Matt Thums, Steve Emt, Shawn Sadowski, Oyuna Uranchimeg, and Laura Dywer.
In 2023, David Samsa and Pam Wilson captured a silver medal in the Mixed Doubles discipline. In 2024, the United States will be represented by Matt Thums and Oyuna Uranchimeg, the 2024 USA Curling Wheelchair Curling Mixed Doubles National Champions.
All the athletes in Korea will be supported by Wheelchair Curling Director and Head Coach Pete Annis, Assistant Coach Jessica Schultz, and Sports Psychologist Matt Mikesell.
