1976 WORLD CHAMPION BRUCE ROBERTS PASSES

[EAGAN, MN, January 3, 2023] — The skip of the American team that captured the 1976 World Men’s Curling Championship, Bruce Roberts, has passed away at the age of 80.

A member of the USA Curling Hall of Fame, Roberts won the championships of three different states: Minnesota seven times, North Dakota once, and Washington once. He was a National Champion five times: in 1976, 1977 and 1984 when representing Minnesota; in 1966 when representing North Dakota; and in 1967 when representing Washington. He was also National Men’s runner-up in 1975, and recorded a third-place finish in 1978 and a fourth-place result in 1983.

Roberts had an enviable Win-Loss record on the National Championship stage—87 total wins against just 15 losses. In 1976, with his brother Joe playing alongside him, Roberts won the World Championship—known then as the Air Canada Silver Broom—when the event was held in Duluth, MN..

A lifetime member of the Hibbing Curling Club in Hibbing, MN, Roberts attended Bemidji State University and worked as a teacher. You can learn more about his life and legacy here.
