ELMER FREYTAG INDUCTED INTO USA CURLING HALL OF FAME

USA Curling’s Honors and Recognition Committee announced that it has completed the process for the class of 2021 induction into the USA Curling Hall of Fame. 

Induction into the USA Curling Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of recognition in USA Curling. Individuals and/or teams can be inducted as contributors, curlers, or contributor/curlers.

After reviewing nominations, the Honors and Recognition Committee brought forward Mr. Elmer Freytag’s nomination to the USA Curling Board of Directors, where in a unanimous vote, it was determined that Mr. Freytag would be inducted as a contributor.

About Elmer Freytag

Aside from embodying integrity, sportsmanship, and honorable character, Mr. Freytag worked tirelessly to enhance the sport of curling at home and overseas.

As a key organizer in developing the International Curling Federation and the co-captain of the first United States Men’s Curling Association team to travel to Scotland, Freytag was known early on for his contributions to the sport, as well as his curling prowess.

Closer to home, Mr. Elmer Freytag served as the president of the United States Men’s Curling Association, and helped create the Chicago Curling Club, which was the first indoor curling facility in the state of Illinois.

Notably, Mr. Elmer Freytag coached the Bud Somerville rink of Superior, WI, making history as the first American team to win the Men’s World Curling Championship in 1965.

With commendable on-ice talent, Mr. Freytag’s commitment and willingness to utilize his sport intelligence to better others around him truly made him an admirable figure in the curling world.

About the Induction

On the evening of February 10, 2021, Mr. Elmer Freytag was posthumously inducted into USA Curling Hall of Fame.

The Honors and Recognition Committee, CEO Jeff Plush, Chair of the Board Courtney Schmidt, and Mr. Elmer Freytag’s nominator and family were all in attendance of the virtual ceremony, as all were honored to remember and celebrate Mr. Freytag’s exceptional contributions to the sport of curling.
