Bruce Roberts
As a competitive curler, Roberts has the unique distinction of having won the state championships of three different states: Minnesota seven times, North Dakota once and Washington once. He was National Champion five times: in 1976, 1977 and 1984 when representing Minnesota: 1966 when representing North Dakota and 1967 when representing Washington. He was also National runner-up in 1975, 3rd in 1978 and 4th in 1983.
In 1976, he won the World Championship at Duluth and finished 4th the next year in Karlstad, Sweden. His many Bonspiel championships include the prestigious CHC Curling Classic in Winnipeg, Canada.
Roberts’ won-lost record at the National Men’s Championship level is 87 wins and 15 losses and his record at the World is 32 wins and 14 losses.
Roberts was appointed, by then Minnesota Governor Perpich, to serve on the Governor’s Curling Commission to promote curling within the state. Roberts designed and implemented a curling curriculum for the Hibbing High School Physical Education program and spent countless hours on the development of junior curling.
As World Champion in 1976, Roberts had been awarded the Governor Wendell Anderson Trophy in recognition of that achievement. He in turn donated this trophy to the Minnesota Curling Association to recognize Minnesota’s Junior Men’s Champion each year. Roberts donated the trophy in the name of his good friend, the late Hugh Polski. The initial recipient was Polski’s son Craig, that year’s Junior State champion.
