Hughston M. McBain
Hughston McBain was a key figure in the growth of curling in the United States. He convinced and helped establish the United States Men’s Curling Association, was chairman of the 1st National Men’s Championship in 1957 at the Chicago Stadium, and arranged the co-sponsorship of the 2nd Nationals in Milwaukee a year later.
He was a founder of the Chicago Curling Club in 1948 and was the club’s first president. Hughston was born February 9, 11902, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died in May 1977. President of the Marshall Fields & Co., he was a business and civic leader. He maintained a lifelong interest in his Scottish heritage and curling. In 1957, he was named 21st Hereditary Chief of Clan McBain.
A dedicated curler, he gave countless hours to the sport and its growth in the United States.
